The starting point and road to growth

When starting the mentoring journey, Slovak Hungarian media outlet Napunk aimed to improve its processes by using more data visualisation in their articles and by strenghtening their social media channels with digital campaigns.

Being a sister outlet of the successful independent Slovak Dennik N, Napunk’s primary goal is to stand by the values of liberal democracy, human and minority rights, and the healthy Slovak-Hungarian coexistence.

The main challenge in Slovakia comes from the volatile and sometimes unfriendly relationship between the government and the independent press. The country is facing a disinformation bloom, governmental restrictions on the media field, and the effects of propaganda that are apparent and come from the Slovak and the Hungarian governments.

In Napunk’s mentoring process, the most significant changes were evident in the content development of data visualisation and finding and implementing innovative ways to use digital communications channels, mainly social media platforms

“We are grateful that we could be part of this programme. Our mentor and this opportunity helped us to improve our data journalism and social media innovations”

Zoltán Szalay, Editor-in-Chief of Napunk

New ideas emerged on the journey to growth

Hard work and a dedicated relationship with their mentor brought Napunk valuable growth. They have become more visible, gaining new followers through well-planned campaigns. Also, they managed to increase the number of articles with data visualisations, while covering everyday news, writing explanatory articles, conducting long interviews, brainstorming ideas, printing magazines and organising events with their audience.
