Albania, Citizens Channel: Media literacy training at the square

min read

Citizens Channel from Tirana introduced its own e-learning platform called Sheshit (“At the square” in Albanian language) with aim to increase the capacities of young journalists, students of journalism, activists, and citizens in general who report on oppressing issues in their local communities, through intensive Online Courses.

“Sheshit aims to bring together the communities around Citizens Channel. By providing them with knowledge, tools, and equipment to effectively advance their activism on issues related to democracy, environment, rule of law, and human rights,” said Lorin Kadiu, Executive Director of Citizens Channel.

The first out of three modules, focused on media literacy, is already online and ready to welcome participants. It is composed of five learning units, each delivering a set of practical skills and knowledge about how to develop critical thinking when consuming media content. The other two modules will be on Mobile Journalism and Creative Activism Tools.

The long-term plan is for the platform to be self-sufficient in the future.

“That’s what we are aiming – with an online sales campaign of “The Citizens Reporter Kit” – a set of equipment that will empower activists and young journalists to produce high quality visual content. And a set of branded merchandise – that will be a result of our Creative Activism module,” Kadiu said.

Citizens Channel is part of the ‘Media for All’ programme, a UK Government founded project delivered by the British Council in partnership with BIRN, INTRAC and Thomson Foundation.
